Alvin and Cletis, Thank you for your input. Couple of questions.
Cletis will a 1957 three on the tree overdrive trans that was on a V8 bolt up to my six? Was at a car show and found a guy that took it out to install 4speed. You did this with your car. Will it work? So what pumpkin and drive shaft do you guys think I can use? I really want to ditch leaking torque tube, and get Hwy legs on my baby. Have a shop that can make or cut a shaft for me half hr away. Thanks for any help you can give me, And guys love your trucks.

BudRod, should probably move this to the Driveline Forum but I'll say this..... the torque tube can be pulled out and a rear end up thru 1962 will bolt into the original housing. I used a 1959 pumpkin but the 3.90 rear end was to low for me as I'm running a 700R4 with a V8....so I bought a ring and pinion from Yukon gear that is a 3.38 and it keeps the RPM's down for me.
(when removing the torque tube rear end you have to weld up, or remove the swivels from the vehicle and use some 3" perch blocks to set pinion angle and weld in place....all this is if you change the old tranny out.
There are some 'higher gear" ratio's available but the junk yards where you find them are just about all going out of business. Good luck.....

Good luck

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile

This thread was started so I could move the posts above.

Yes, the '57 tranny is the one you need. You'll need the side cover for the shifters from a '54 and older tranny.

The ideal rear end is the '55 first series truck rear end assembly. The springs bolt right up to your shackles and you run with it.

Less ideal but common is the method Alvin described. Another option with more work is changing spring pads on any old differential you want to use.
