Yes, the '57 tranny is the one you need. You'll need the side cover for the shifters from a '54 and older tranny.
The ideal rear end is the '55 first series truck rear end assembly. The springs bolt right up to your shackles and you run with it.
Less ideal but common is the method Alvin described. Another option with more work is changing spring pads on any old differential you want to use.
