I can identify one as a '42 - '53 by the 839770 block casting number and I am happy with that.
The other has me confused. It has the short side plate + 2 studs valve cover. Block # 5843350 . I cannot find this number listed , any ideas anyone ? Head # on this engine is 3835913 engine is painted green (a long time ago) has a 6v gen and starter. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 325 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2008 Posts: 325 | | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,096 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,096 | Thankyou very much Stove , a 235 eh, I'm very happy about that | | | | | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,096 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 1,096 | I just pulled the valve cover (2 stud) off and find the gasket and head have the 4 screw holes for the later 235 valve cover . Had me fooled There are a couple of tight exh valves to free up , then I will see if it goes | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,270 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,270 | Does it have the oil distributor on the drivers side, below the manifold. If not, it will be a full pressure, insert rod bearing engine with aluminum pistons (originally came with a Powerglide transmission in cars in '53). A quick tell for this engine is the presence of captain's bars on the block above the starter. Jackpot! Carl

No, not really. I just happened to luck into one when I bought my '50 3100. BTW, his is Canadian with no oil distributor and he doesn't see captain's bars. Is it a full pressure engine? Carl

A bit of hardening off 2nd gear , all the rest looks good . Huge clutch . I took the starter off and checked again for captains bars , none there . I have had the plugs out and valve gear off and oil down the bore , so this morning I got a bar in thru the starter hole and eased the crank around a little moves ok now . I'm getting excited about this engine . Not withstanding it was pulled for scrap , I think it has potential. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,270 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,270 | No oil distributor = full pressure in my mind. This would be the first I have ever heard of a '53 235 with full pressure without captain's bars. But the Canadian engines seem to have a lot of surprises. One that comes to mind is the Canadian 216 with short side cover. Carl
