For helping keep this great

on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 581 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 581 | Yesterday I ran my truck for about 5 minutes and drove to the back of the property. Then I restarted it and noticed the temp gauge pegged over 210! Drove it to the barn and shut if off. Noticed the coolant was down and added maybe 6 pints. I also noticed some oil burning off the manifold towards the rear of the engine and a small exhaust leak in the same proximity. (the valve cover is just snugged on and leaks some) The oil looks "liquidy" but still amber. No signs of cream and is at a normal level.
I have to admit that I had revved it up on start up but nothing any different than shifting from 2nd to 3rd on a hill. I'm hoping it's a water pump issue.
Today I went and checked it out again. The coolant level dropped about a quart over night. There was some coolant on the cardboard but not so much as a quart. I started it up for a few minutes to watch the coolant level after I refilled. It did warm up and the thermostat did seem to open since there was some movement of coolant. Still greenish in color but does have some rusty looking blobs here and there. There has been no smoke from the exhaust white or blue. There does not appear to be any visible drops coming from the radiator or hoses. Both heater hoses were warm although I did not check the upper or lower hoses.
As far as the water pump, it squeaks, has some play in the bearings, and appears to now be slinging some rusty spray on the engine.
Still have to check the spark plugs for color.
Any opinions appreciated. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,299 Renaissance Man | | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,299 | Seems to me that the time for a new water pump was quite a while ago. Carl

It has been on my mind but since this is a yard truck it doesn't see more than 15 minutes of run time a month. It does have a recored radiator I installed. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 1,214 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2012 Posts: 1,214 | Couldn't help but notice your moniker, 641Workmaster. My SIL just bought one with a 5' rotary cutter to clear some property. Seems to be a good tractor with a few problems we'll work through. Seems alittle on the fast side in 1st and reverse tho. definitely a lot more tractor than my old TE20 Fergie.
re. your overheat problem. You may have dodged the bullet. The water pump swap is definitely called for. I run a 160 thermostat in my old 216 and it never gets above the "8" in 180 on the gauge. I tried a 180 to see if it would do away with cold weather condensation (it didn't) and it casued the engine to run alittle past the "0". So I put the 160 back in. You may consider a 160 if you aren't running one.

Yeah, it's a good little tractor and could use a little lower gearing. I've had it 16 years already. It has needed very little maintenance. I've had many different attachments over the years and it has handled them all. Weights really help. | | |
