A solenoid starter is a different beast. 6 Volt starter with a 6 Volt flywheel. 12 Volt starter with a 12 Volt wheel. The diameter and tooth pitch are different(count the teeth on the flywheel to determine what you have). 139 teeth on the 6 Volt fly wheel. More on the 12 Volt one.

Instant start up without the "I think I can, I think I can" sinking feeling of the six volt battery. Having said that, the other reason I made the switch was the frustration that I had with the voltage regulator (I went with a one wire, internal regulator alternator).
