Thanks for letting me join this forum!

Just yesterday I purchased a 1947-1954 GMC (2-Ton maybe?) truck. I don't have the exact year yet because I'm still trying to decipher the serial number. The truck is titled as a 1948, and that's going to be what the State of Colorado thinks! But I'm starting to think that it might have actually been made in 1953... I don't really care, I'm just glad I found it!

I bought it minus engine, trans, and bed, but that's OK with me. It's not much to look at now, but I hope to bring it back to a useful service condition.

Thanks again for letting me join the club. I'll have many questions, but I'm pretty good at searching before I ask. That way I don't annoy you guys and gals too much.

You probably already know but in case you don't we have a BIG BOLT forum here and the guys there are sharp as a tack and willing to help as you bring your truck back to service.
Check out the tech tips. You'll find a "vin buster" there that may help you decipher what you have....or at least tell you what the vin says it is. If no luck ask the guys in the Big Bolt Forum and they'll help you out.
The key to best solutions and answers is to ask questions in the most appropriate garage forums. Like engine questions in the Engine Forum and so on..... and, if a moderator feels it will be better answered in another forum they will move it for you to help out. Great guys and gals here and tons of knowledge. Welcome aboard and good luck.

Welcome David, looks pretty good. I'd say that looks like a '51, if the doors are original. Just make a plan and do it! If you need help, just ask. Good luck.

Post the code on the metal tag on the driver's doorpost (or on the inside of the glove box door). That might help to ID your truck.

Is there number on a hood side emblem (like "350")?

If you have a title/registration, post that code.

What we can see of the sheet metal looks good.

Search, read, and ask any questions.

The serial/vin number on the tag on the hinge side of the drivers door is: 353 24 P 15821

There are no letters before the 353.

I tried the "Vin Buster" page and the results from my serial number tell me the truck was made in 1963. I don't think that's correct. But I put a url to an image in my photobucket account of a page I think says more, but I'm still not 100% sure it's correct. I circled my serial number at the bottom. I still can't get any links to work in this forum yet, but you can cut and past the url in a browser and see why I think the truck was made in 1953.

Hi David and welcome to Stovebolt! Beautiful truck!

In '93, I attended a digital graphics workshop in Ft Collins (loved the place, by the way) and we were working with brand new digital cameras (1st Gen Kodak/Nikon DCS 100) at the time. I went out to this marvelous junkyard I saw from the highway up from Denver to shoot pictures ... I have always wondered if that junkyard is still there. It was off to the East of the interstate that runs from Denver North and before you got to Ft Collins.
