My '40 drivers side locks from the inside and the passenger side has a key. I have an extra keyed lock that I am going to have keyed to match for the drivers side.

49 brian, Is that the lock used on the lower part of the door? Ive seen one before but figured it was just something someone came up with. Do they make reproductions? Maybe it could be moved to just below the door handle. hmmmmm

Here's the locking handle.

Good idea Brian to use that handle on both doors.
Stea, I've located a complete 39 GMC grill if your interested.

two of those would be cool, but it doesnt look like mine. Where is the square rod that goes from the handle to the latch mechanism. Also where would you get the lock cylinders?

Your passenger side door handle should look like that one. Cylinders show up on ebay and can be rekeyed. I think the car lock cylinders are the same as truck.

As far as the key lock I think 41 and later had key lock below door handle not in the door handle. That is how mine was. But I have read that 1941 can also have the key in the door handle so maybe they switched mid year but your 39 should have it in the handle on the passenger side. All of them were passenger side exterior lock only with a little interior knob at the rear of the driver's door. I asked about this once before and someone told me that everyone exited the passenger side in the city (where you actually used locks) because the streets were so narrow. Sounds good anyway.

mine has non locking handles on both sides, the latch mechanism has the little wing to lock that door but it doesnt work. on the passenger side it had what looks to me like a cabinet lock down low on the door.

they are in the door handle through 39 if my source is correct.(not positive though) My 37 is the same way. no door lock on driver side but one on the passenger. BUT some didn't have outside locks at all. I sold my spares but seems I saw a door lock handle in the ads of VCCA magazine.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

This took a lot of work, but I took an original passenger door lock cyl, turned it over and installed in drivers door. You have to find another passenger locking latch mech, to take apart to use the locking links, which have to be cut and flipped, welded ,and install in the drivers latch assembly. It took a little time, but it looks original, key on drivers door goes in upside-down, but works great. Both doors have same lock under handle. Just can't unlock or lock from inside. It was an idea that worked for me.

Is there other years I could be looking for that will work? Also do any of the cars have compatable door handles?
