I am in the dissassambly process of a 53.I was wondering if someone can tell me the correct name for the odd bolts that hold a lot of the truck together,you know the ones-almost looks like a figure 8 in a round head,and where i might find a socket set to remove them.Thanks,

The technical term for these are "clutch head" screws and bolts. We have all had to find proper tools for these. I know that my local NAPA store sells a series of sized screwdrivers, still used for adjusting some carbs. Other tool companies sell clutch head inserts for ratchets and the like. Many suppliers for old trucks also carry these (I've seen them in the LMC catalog) Check with your local stores and ask for "clutch head" bits. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 63 Member | | Member Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 63 | 51PhatBoy,

Search the Rust archives or other parts of the board for learning everyone's favorite method for getting 50 year-old rusty bolts to budge. I recommend PB Blaster rather than WD-40 before heat. Also, applying some force forward (tightening) before applying oil/blaster then removal seems to be a good mode. If you got a Stovebolt, you've spent time trying to coax these apart before they snap. My trucks are a little newer (64 and 74) so I haven't run into that, else I'd offer some help.

He finally got one out that wasn't too buggered up and we went up to the local Ace Hardware store(which is an especially huge hardware store) and showed them the clutch head... they had one of those six side insert heads, like the kind used in screwdrivers with multiple tips... usually used for going from philips head to flat... anyhoo, they had one.  We popped it into the screwdriver and it worked great. I think pop decided he did not like the lcuth head and replaced whatever it was with flat or philps head screws/bolts.  -W | | |
