(I am not happy at all).. The guy doing the prep work for me said that the truck had enamel primer before and thats way they kept using that type of primer. He further advised that due to the type of primer and since he had to use a lot of bondo on the doors and fenders it will be better to use enamel paint insted of base coat clear coat, because enamel will cover everything better. He also advised the I could not use catalist primer in top of the enamel primer, can anybody clear this up for me thanks in advance... | | | | | Joined: Mar 2001 Posts: 629 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2001 Posts: 629 | Is this where MARTINSTAR says, "pick a paint system and follow the manufacturer directions"?
HA!
I wish I could help but i really don't have any idea.

I would think you should be able to use a sealer over the old primer... I've never dealt with this, I usually take 'em down to bare metal. I disagree with the thought that enamel covers better than basecoat/clearcoat. A finish is only as good as what you put it on. Maybe he's not experienced and color sands and polishes the final enamel finish to rid it of the flaws... How much bondo did he use? Maybe he needs to invest in a hammer and dolly... Just my $.02 worth.

He's wasting your time, money and you'll end up with a finish that you are not happy with at all. Besides, it sounds like the jobber doesn't want to do it either... 7 months?

Well 4.50 months later it finally came home. They used a catalyst primer, and CCBC. Looks good. It's in the gallery page (Don Graham) It's the stock Grandpa looking yellow and white '71 fleetside. http://www.stovebolt.com/gallery.htm | | | | | Joined: May 2003 Posts: 47 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: May 2003 Posts: 47 | Thanks for all the input (am in miami, fl.) is not easy to find people that want to work in this trucks. I went by the shop yesterday and spoke to the owner of the shop he advised that the primer that the truck has now is lacquer primer. He further advised that he could use ppg k38 catalist primer. I am going to take the truck out of there for sure. Do you guys think I should wait for the k38 primer..thanks | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 Member | | Member Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 1,745 | Any shop worth anything would not want to put a new coat of paint over unknowns. It takes a lowlevel shop person less than a day to take the whole truck down to bare metal with the proper sanding discs and a variable speed polisher/sander. Now he can finally assess how much metal repair the truck needs. Only then should he be thinking about fillers. He can then use any brand primer and finish coat he wants.
Stop the work. Ask him how much for the work he did so far. Come to an agreement. (He has you by the shorthairs). Then find a real shop.

If you like what he's done, then don't run off to quick. I've had two trucks done with a single stage paint. Acrylic Urethane is very durable and doesn't use a clear coat. Now that I've had two trucks with a single stage I acually like them better. Easier to touch up also. Maybe this is what he's calling enamel. You will have a heavy price to pay if you take it out. The current shop is going to sock it to you for not letting them finish the job and the shop you take it to is going to want to start over because they will not want to trust what someone else has done. If you like the work that the current shop has done to other cars then I would leave it there. If he bothchs the job, then you can take him to court and get your money back, maybe..... Think about it and try not to get the shop mad at you. Try to work with them, even if you decide to take it out. I got tired of paying big bucks for shoddy work. Get a compressor and gun and go for it.
