For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2011 Posts: 148 | got a set of mirrors for my 49 1/2 ton. Is there any way to measure where to put these things. Sure hate to drill more holes than necessary. The mirrors I got are supposed to be like the original. Thanks for any help. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 4,263 | I installed mine when the truck was apart
under the dash is a bracket with 4 holes
I matched the two that corresponded with the mirror I used and used a spring loaded center punch from the inside.
then drilled from the outside using the dimple as a guide.

I would try to print your picture and then re-size it using your dimensions.

I used a 3 foot long Harbor Freight drill bit to clear the steering mast. You don't absolutely need it, but it sure made it easier. Carl

Is that the flexible-shaft bit that regularly goes on-sale for $5.00?
That bit might not be manufactured in China. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Absolutely agree with Gus and Bruce right down to every detail. I used a transfer punch sized to the pre-punched factory hole from the inside, then picked up the dimple outside to drill my hole. Came out perfect on both sides. Using a paper template leaves to much room for mistake in my book. dg

I try to avoid any interaction with the underside of an AD dash. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 9,671 | Glad that worked out for you Brad, how you find that NOS stuff is a source of constant amazement to me. I'm sure the templates did the job for hundreds of thousands of accessory installers at the Chevy dealerships back in the day also. But finding an original template to most of us today would be akin to finding a fart in a wind storm. I wouldn't trust any reproductions template, if you know what I mean. So picking up the holes from the inside would work the best for 99% of the cases. DG

I am going to try the automatic center punch method. I am a lot older, rounder, and everything hurts more than the last time I drilled them from the inside. Carl
