I've done a search on this and have found everything from, "There are rubber sweeps on an AD window?" to, "use dish soap," to, "they weren't as big of PITA I thought they would be." But I'm finding the outer rubber sweeps on my '47 AD to be a BIG PITA. Any other tricks or tips greatly appreciated. I tried six times tonight to no avail. Thanks in advance.

is your door assembled?

I slid mine in easily, but my doors guts were apart.

If I remember correctly there was an opening or slit on one end

I tried sliding mine in . no way, I opened the track up some with a screwdriver then pushed them in a little at a time with the screwdriver then crimped them back when I was done

I've taken the glass out and the inner molding and I have access to the channel for the rubber but it doesn't want to slide very easily. I get it so far then it pops out.

Rusty,

This might sound a little crazy, but I used personal lubricant on mine to get them to slide into the slot, or you might try a product P-80 emulsion. It is a rubber lubricant, but a bit high on price. That's why I used personal lubricant.....the cheapest you can find. It's clear and will clean up real easy and it's much cheaper.

Get the cheapest, store-brand, non-scented personal lubricant, as Tim suggests. It evaporates, after serving as an excellent assembly lubricant.

DO NOT USE ANYTHING WITH SILICONE IN IT (it is a contaminant you do not want on your vehicle or in your garage).

Run across the sweep problem several times this year. I had no problem when I
installed mine, but that was nearly a decade ago and I don’t remember which vendor I
got them from. Had the door laying on horses and apart and installed the sweeps first,
no prying, no K-Y petroleum jelly or Dawn needed.
The problems I’ve seen were they vary from one vendor to the next. Like Goldilocks and
the Three Bears, some are to small and pop out of the channel, some are too big and
are near impossible to get in and some are just right.
The ones that The Truck and Car Shop in Orange, CA stock now seem to be the right
size, last I saw them.

Thanks for the good advice Tim. The subject on P.L. has been mentioned before. Good to know there are alternatives when working on these old trucks. Steve

I finally got one in!! It didn't slide in (that was like trying to put a 3 pound salami into a 2 pound bag.) I placed the bottom 'ear' of the sweep into the lower lip then used a windshield stick to push the upper 'ear' into the upper lip a little bit at a time. I used lube which I think helped. It was slow, but there was no way the sweep was going to slide. Thanks for your help.

Right now is usually about the time you realize you put it in upside down.

LOL. I was thinking about that, Denny. When I told my kid of my success, he texted and asked if I did it right - facing up (smart a**)

Come on, not a smart a**, sounds like a kid with some common sense.
Those rubber sweeps seem to cause more trouble than any other
part when rebuilding the doors. Wish someone would get it
right and put the ones that are making ill fitting rubber
out of business.
Right now, your best bet for success without a head ache is
to buy a set from 3 or 4 vendors and hope one of them is correct.

I think deep down he was hoping I had it in upside down so he could have good laugh at his old man. I could hear in the tone of his text!

Throw the kid a bone. Tell him, "Yep, that's what I did wrong." Then be sure to call him a smart a** so that he doesn't get too cocky.

The ones I've seen Gus, have been cast with an upward curve off
of the web that slides into the channel. Not to say that some
are being cast straight.
I took some pictures of a couple new ones with my flip phone but
don't have the slightest idea how to download them to my
confuser, or email them or not even sure if they're saved
or where they're saved.

Here's another one, don't remember the source, think it might
have been one of the guys on the forum, hope they don't mind
my stealing their picture.

Denny, the pic with the red background is from me. (No problem with you posting it!) Mine looks like the Steele one but I didn't measure it.

Denny is right on....! Mine had a little curve to them. Got mine from Jcarter or Classic Parts. Work good.
