Is it possible to get a NEW vibration damper ( harmonic balancer ) for the 216 cu.in. Chevrolet truck engine? Can they still be ordered from a GM dealer?

There are none available from GM.
NOS show up on eBay or swap meets now and then.
There are companies that rebuild them
There are also a lot of good used around also.

Tim,

Find the part number (in the Parts Catalog - Old Online Chevy Manuals) and try to search for it here.

I do not gamble, but I'd bet is is no longer available from GM.

There are, however, a few GM NOS parts vendors with on-line catalogs. I cannot find a URL. A few years ago, I found 50 NOS, GM/GMC-only, big-bolt wheel nuts.

I'll look tomorrow (but, I still doubt you'll find one).

Do you necessarily need a balancer with the hand crank lugs?

I have built up a new balancer using a 6" diameter item for a small block V8 and a 2-groove pulley for a big block engine. It requires just a little machining to make the pulley grooves align properly, but the assembly is made up with all new parts.

Sounds like all you need is a replacement for the original? Most Salvage yards in the US have a BatPhone. You as the customer ask for a part, the yard you went to doesn't have it, they put the request out there over the BatPhone and someone answers. It would be a fun journey to the yard anyway! Take a puller made for it to save time! Good luck!

I wonder with rubber the way it ages, whether an NOS damper is a good thing.

I have a 235 engine but used as many parts from the 216 as possible, including the 216 damper with the crank lugs on it. I had it rebuilt by the previously mentioned Damper Dudes. They happen to be local and as I walked in the door with my old damper, only halfway to the counter the Dude says Chevy 216. I knew I was in the right place. Finished product was like new.

Thanks to ALL of you for all the information concerning a vibration damper. I will check it out and GREAT information on rebuilding them.

Tim are those prices from Damper Dudes? A consideration before trying to put a 216 HB on the newer 235/261 (with 12v) would be the pulley width. I am not sure if the pulleys are the same diameter as the newer engines.

There's a reason why the 216 and 235 didn't use the same damper.
