I don't think the diff on my '53 GMC is original. Since I'm working in the brakes, I'd like to try to id it:ML 12 16 W.

There is a "12345" just to the right of the carrier and the code provided above over by the brake bracket. There is evidence of other spring perches being torched off and the existing ones welded on.

That rear was not offered in GMC in 1953. From the picture it could be almost anything from a few years later. How many bolt holes do the wheels have?

Its GM, if you pull the cover off, the ring gear will be marked with gear ratio and date of manufacture. It will be on the outer edge. Ratio will look something like this 11-41 (3.73 ratio) 10-41 (4.10 ratio), and date will be something like 09-55 or 10-65 with the first number the month and second the year.

Hy gusco, as crenwelge said that rear axle is from a much newer 1/2 ton, GM "12 bolt", (the number of bolts which retain the inspection cover)

Alrighty! Do I take the cover with me to the parts store in order to get the correct gasket for reassembly?

Popped the cover off: 9/69, 9:37 (4.11).
Now the question becomes: Do I look for original wheel cylinders or wheel cylinders for a 1970? The ones that came off are Delco Moraine pt. #5450649
