I have a plain Jane 350 to go in a '49 3100.
I am leaning towards a 1985-1990 700R4 transmission.
What would be the best rear axle ratio for this combination?
Carl

Carl, I'm working on the same set up for my 41. My research on the 700r4 shows 87-92 was the better years. Can't remember what change was made for '87, but I can try to find it.

Check a 200r4 also. Lower first gear ratio.

What year did they go away from mechanical speedometer?

93 is when the shifting logic went electronic, but I think the electronic speedometer was a couple years before that.

It's my understanding the tailshaft (4 bolt) can be changed out from an earlier mechanical speedometer tranny, even a 350, to install the mechanical speedometer gear.

The 700R4 has a lower first gear that the 200, 3.06:1 in the 700, 2.74:1 in the 200. Also, the 200 was never used in full size trucks.

You're right longbox, it was a smoother 1-2 shift I was thinking.
