Picture of "real" truck. looks like period-correct sleeper.Check-out those hinges! Fuel tank looks like "Brigadier",or "General",though. Not trying to sell the models. I just thought someone might like the pic. Thanks!! http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTA3MVgxNjAw/z/1g0AAMXQCtlRSNoI/$T2eC16h,!yEE9s5jHP3kBRSNoH59Qg~~60_57.JPG From the color of the "plates",the pic. was probably taken in the early to mid '70's. Red/Yellow-Kansas,and the blue plate was Iowa. "Warren Transport" still "runs" out of Nebraska.

They now have all owner operators. The crawl through sleepers were used from the 50's until the early 90's. It was a tough life being gone a week in one of those things. I musta had rocks in my head back then. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 1,159 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Nov 2010 Posts: 1,159 | "White line Fever",Kenneth! No power steering, and air conditioning was the windows down, and the vents open! Trucks "ran" a lot more 2-lane,(at best) highways, and some routes were more narrow hilly steep and curvy gravel roads, than paved! 45 M.P.H.,was a common speed limit for trucks, and most states didn't exceed 50,on 2-lane highways! This was true up into the early '70's,here in Iowa A lot more physical labor involved, too. No such thing as "no touch" freight! I REALLY ADMIRE you guys! On a side note, Anybody know where a sleeper like that may be found? Have a 51 650 that's need one. Thanks, Tom

Does anyone know if it's still in business?? Back in the mid '80's they had about 40 acres of vintage assorted "Big trucks",from the '30's-'late'70's. I remember thinking,"If I win the "Lottery",I'm stopping there first"! If anyone would have a vintage sleeper, they would,if they're still in business!

I was curious the first time I saw it what the deal was with the air intakes in front of the hood. I wonder if that was paint or, it almost looks like trim of some kind. I have never seen another like it. I don't know much about the sleeper other than it looks similar to a Mercury. Google Mercury sleepers so see some really nice ones. My guess is that they are pretty rare to find one today. I saw the Ebay auction for the models too. Wish they were a little larger. Thanks for sharing. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,964 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,964 | That picture was in a ATHS discussion before. The air intakes definitely had a grill in front of them. The parts book clearly shows the grill. It was common in those days to replace the original air intake with a Farr air cleaner. The air cleaner was about 24" square. I used them in the 60's and into the 70's until Donaldson came out with the dinosaur head like was standard on 4070B Internationals. Factory air filters collected water and the oil level would rise and stop up the filter.
There were many manufacturers of sleeper boxes. I'm not sure if the one pictured is a crawl through or a coffin type. The crawl through had the back window removed. The coffin type only had entry from the end. ICC regulations required a way of communicating with the driver with doubles operations. Some used a string with a bell on it. Some used a tube like the submarines used.
Very few of these trucks survived because the major components such axles, engine and transmission could be used in any truck. When the cab became junk, the usable components were removed and the rest was scrapped. Many were wrecked. Drivers drove sleepy, bounced pills off the windshield, roads were bad and drivers just accepted the fact that a lot of them were going to get killed. About 1/4 of the drivers I knew that lived here in town 60 years ago were killed in a truck. | | | | | Joined: May 2012 Posts: 574 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2012 Posts: 574 | that is a really nice looking rig

The owner had several trucks there including GMC General that were all very meticulously restored. I was very impressed with the quality of the paint and the trucks. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,964 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2008 Posts: 4,964 | That is the air intake grill I was referring to, but I don't think it was connected to the air cleaner. I think it was merely to allow more air under the hood. Donaldson came out with the first way to separate water with their water separators that came out in the early 70's. http://www.donaldsontoolbox.com.au/tech-talk/water-your-intake-system/The one we referred to as the dinosaur head worked the best because it gave you a kind of ram air effect. Whoever, when I was in a heavy snow, I had to put one of the round ones on because the dinosaur head would plug up with snow. I hope this doesn't get me banned from the site, but I just got through buying a cabover International like I bought in September 1968 when I totaled my GMC. If you scroll through the pictures, it shows an air cleaner that I think would have been similar to the GMC. Only difference is, the GMC would have probably had what we called a hat over the top of it to keep the water out. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-International-Emeryville-/121554371167?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=Qc6G2CA6dt79YZR5sPUYJARqa3g%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc Also, the picture shows a pretty good picture of what could have very been an original seat in the GMC. I drove a seat like that for about a half a million miles until I finally bought an air ride seat. Unless you are restoring your 860 to be absolutely original, the dry air cleaner is the only way to go. By the mid 70's, oil bath air cleaners were obsolete. | | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,747 24601 | | 24601 Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,747 | Ken ... Talking about old trucks on an old truck web site .... oh yeah, like, you are soooooo banned ... So what should I consider using instead of the oil bath air cleaner in my 9500 with the 6-71? Is there something that would bolt in under the hood? Sorry to hijack the thread ...

However, if you drive in rainy weather, either rain or road spray will get into the oil bath cleaner. The water goes to the bottom and the oil level rises until it gets into the filter media. Here is a picture of an International 9000 series filter. It was used from 1985 until 2000 so elements are available. https://truckpartsinventory.com/parts/details/80596993They lay horizontally with the inlet on one side and the other side. They pass enough air because these trucks were offered with engines of over 500HP. I think I still have a cab or 2 that I haven't crushed. If you think you might can use one, I'll send it to you. Or I'll put it in a checked bag. I will be flying into Harrisburg, PA for the truck show. | | | | | Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,747 24601 | | 24601 Joined: Nov 1995 Posts: 5,747 | I probably don't drive enough in the rain for it to be an issue, then. Although, I bet there's water in there from the trip to South Bend .... THAT trip was a little wet ... I'll be on the look out for one locally, though, to save you the hassle. If I find one, I'll switch it out.
Thanks for the info and it will be good to see you again at York.
