I would think 'skipping' would either be a problem in the trans driving gear or in the speedo itself - 'jumping' might be a more accurate description of the result of a dirty speedo head

Is it possible that the speedometer housing got kinked while you did the wiring harness?

If the above hints and tips don't fix it. You can oil the speedo head, yes there are tips for that. Use search. And last if it stops when the cable nut is backed off, then trim the inner shaft with a flat file. Just a bit and see if that helps. Some replacement cables are just a bit too long.

....and I have experience some NEW cables have ends that are smaller than the "old" ones and therefore will not work well in a somewhat worn speedo.....all good tips so I'm just adding to them.

(my speedo repair man actually did measurements and showed me the difference. Had him make me the inside cable and have been worry free ever since)

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile
