For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 14 | I went and got 5 ton of #2 stone with my 68 C50, It has the 292. All went well except for one hill, I hit it in 4 high doing about 40, fast as I could go on the winding road, midway I mis shifted or something? I finished the hill about 5 mph in 4 low? Coming out of the quarry one fellow in a new tri axle gave me a honk and thumbs up, I think he liked seeing the old Chevy working. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 401 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2008 Posts: 401 | That's awesome. That's what their for right? I'd love to have an old flatbed or dump truck and really use it. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,851 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,851 | It sounds like you need to do a little practicing on split-shifting to keep the RPM up there. Once a small engine bogs down, most of the pulling power goes away. The 292 will pull very well as long as you don't lug it down out of its torque band. It's great that you've got the old rig working like it was meant to be, though! Jerry

I used to haul a Full Cord of wood with my '64 C-30 with a 292 and always hit the same long, steep hill on the way back. I would keep it in 4th till the RPM's dropped off at a certain point, then quickly double clutch downshift to 3rd. On this hill I was able to get a running start at about 60, but never dropped below 30 at any point.
I'm not really familiar with your truck, but a Straight-Thru Muffler makes a pretty big difference for some extra power.
Makes it sound sweet too !!

It's a wonder the clutch didn't slip!! I'm glad you got the "Old Girl" working, though! Just be easy on "Her". Welcome to the "Bolt"!! Got any pic's?? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 14 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jun 2014 Posts: 14 | Yeah I gotta work on the split shifting for sure. I put a pic over in the welcome area few weeks ago, I am trying to post more but having trouble with them right now. | | | | | Joined: May 2011 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2011 Posts: 10 | Make sure the 2 speed is shifting fully and correctly before trying much actual split shifting with a load on, not the place to find out something's not working. Driving these old trucks is a blast, and split shifting to negotiate a hill with a load just showcases how well engineered they were. Hammer down sir! | | |
