Hello folks need your help once again.I went to look at another 54 3100,It has a butterfly steering wheel ,was that an option that was available? Also it has a 4 speed on the floor,I'm trying to determine if that trans. is original to the truck.The floor pan trans. cover has been cut,it appears to have been cut with a torch.Does the trans. floor panel come from the factory that way or is it a much more finished piece?

PS The engine has been changed.It has a 54 car engine in it. I believe it is a 235 but it has acorn valve cover nuts.Engine #0219787f54z

No butterfly steering wheel was a GM option or accessory on a 1954 truck (the only different steering wheels might be the color on deluxe two-tone interior 54/55 trucks).

There was a different standard/factory floor cover for 3-speed, 4-speed, and Hydra-Matic transmissions.

Do you still have an enclosed drive-shaft?

2-bolt covers were not standard equipment in 1954, but it is easy to use them on a 54 and later head with an older valve cover. If you have taken the valve cover off, are there 4 holes in the head around the base of the valve cover?

That butterfly sounds like a passenger car option but I've seen several different accessory steering wheels in trucks. I believe the shaft/splines are the same, not sure about horn contact parts.

Here is a picture of the 54' 4-speed cover, if modified with a torch it was most likely a 3-speed version without any holes. You can see how the original is raised to clear the 4-speed transmission.

That 20" steering wheel would be very nice for people with little-or-no clearance between their body and the wheel.

What is a butterfly steering wheel?

Does it refer to the center Medallion ?

Those wheels are cool, I like the horn ring also.

So.....have we established whether they were optional, from a
Chevrolet car, from a different maker, aftermarket or what?
Also that one with the clock in it is the only one of it's
kind that I've ever seen. Wonder if it wasn't custom made.

If a butterfly steering wheel was optional on a 54/55st Chevrolet truck, it most likely came with the Power Steering option that Lares Corporation assures me was available on 1954 Chevrolet trucks. This is after Lares sent me an incorrect steering assembly, and then told me that my 5 assemblies were all wrong. Luckily, I bought the assembly through Rockauto.com, who gave me full refund, including shipping back to Lares.

I think the name refers to the general shape of the horn ring as it is similar to wings. Not the medallion. If you have seen a drag steering wheel on a fuelie drag car, it is a butterfly wheel.
