I was wondering if anybody knew if the PTO off of a 1944 Chevrolet 4x2 Civilian with a five speed tranny and chevy engine would fit onto a 1942 Chevrolet 6x6 with a five speed tranny and GMC 270. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

OLBLUE1941,
I've found after getting into a 6x6 CCKW build, that very little if any thing in the running gear of a civilian truck fits a military one. I may be wrong but everything was different in my 6x6. There are folks here that will know so just hang on. Welcome to Stovebolt, send some pics when you can post them.

If we can't help you here (and I hope we can wink ), you can certainly try steelsoldiers.com or http://www.cckw.org/ or http://g503.com/

Hope you find the info!

Thanks for stopping by stovebolt.com

Need to clarify what you have...Chevrolet never made a 6x6, nor did it have a 5 speed, or a GMC engine. You may have a cocktail as installing GMC engines and 5 speed transmissions into Chevys is/was a common occurance.

I thought that P.T.O.'s were universal units,as far as mounting plate configuration. The difference may be that the older units incorporated straight-cut gears,as opposed to helical-cut. I've seen SM 420's with plates on both sides of the case. hope this helps.

Willy,

The PTO 6 mounting bolt pattern is an SAE standard, but the driven gear has to match your specific transmission...some have straight cut gears and some have helical.

Thanks for all the help. I misunderstood the guy on the phone, it is a GMC 6x6, not a chevy. I was aware of the difference in gears, I was just curious if anyone knew if it was a direct fit. Once again, thank you.
