Well I got the springs done and all the spring hardware to set up the new axle. The springs went in rather nicely and as suspected the spring pads on the axle are off a little by about 3/8". I mounted up the wheels and set it down on the ground to see how the new stance looks. Here are some pics.
I Like this one because it's OE hardware. smile

OK, on to the rest:

And here are before and after shots of the stance:

After all this I think the front springs and spindles should be a piece of cake. Doh!! Did I just say that outloud?? Here's to hoping anyway.

At least I'm looking forward to some 4.63 gears in the rear and a softer ride.

Lookin' GOOD!! Troy Duncan is planning on truckin' this bus back to Missouri, graft a T.F. front clip on it,and build it into a 4x4! He wants to use disc brakes,as well. how did you do your disc brake set-up? http://s1181.photobucket.com/user/willybickey/media/BillyWsbuscapades010.jpg.html?

Howdy --- Maybe I missed it, but what rear end did you transplant? Is that a Dana? (4.63 is the most common ratio in the Dana 80's) And what motor/trans arrangement turns it?

Hi wetwilly5757, Thanks. The disc brake set up is stock on this axle. One of the reasons I am happy the way things are going. I recently talked to my spring shop techs and they are going to help make some new bushing for the front king pins when I swap to a modern spindle with discs. Grigg's tech info is great and I am going to do just that. The tolerances for the new vs old king pins for me are just .07". The spring shop guy said they have a guy that can make those bushings in the shop no problem. I'm getting excited to do that too. I just need to find a source for spindles for a P30 step van now. I see lots of hardware and such, but no spindles.

Tango, yes this is a Dana 80 from a 2001 HD3500 truck. I'm running a rebuilt 454 and the SM420 transmission at the moment, but going to do a TH400 when I find the right one. I think it would be good to put it in first. Then I won't have to modify the driveline more than once. I'm looking for one out of a Motorhome to match the weight it is pulling. Then if I want to put in another gear I'll add an overdrive unit. We'll see how it goes with just the TH400 first though.

Just got the new Ubolts yesterday so more work this weekend. smile

I've done one of these conversions and it worked out nicely to simply bore the stock P-30 bushings to fit the new (for your original axle) 2 ton king pin/bushings kit. I removed the used P-30 bushings, chucked them in the lathe and bored them close to size, then re installed with loctite sleeve retaining compound and reamed them to proper size, finally install new bushings and properly ream/hone to fit kingpin.

Your best bet on finding the P-30 axle components you'll need is to buy a complete P-30 front axle. Unlikely you'll find them new at a price you can afford and best chances of finding them used is a complete axle.

Thanks Grigg. I guess I'll be on the hunt for a stepvan or something with the P30 chassis for the whole axle.

azfenders, sounds like you have a cool bus. 19' is pretty short. Do you have pics of it yet? I would've liked a shorter one, but I found mine and it was pretty cool and a great price. Welcome to the group.
