on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 161 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2014 Posts: 161 | Hi my name is Jack. I was posting on another truck forum and was advised to come here. They said this place was more my style.I got a complete 51 chevy pickup in trade for some carpentry work. It hasn't run for many years. I just had to get it shipped to Maine from Arizona.I've been working on it over the winter. Replaced the rubber and some glass in the doors.Latches, liners, arm rests etc.Went through the fuel system, ignition and installed all new brake parts. I should be driving it out of the tent in a month. This will be my Daily Driver and a work truck. It had a rotted out wood flat bed. I started from scratch and built a wooden box on the back to carry woodworking tools and other related stuff. I'll post pictures of my truck when I get it out of the tent. I was a mechanic years ago but when they put computers under the dash they lost me.So I learned carpentry. That's enough about me for now. I've posted here for a little while and I like it. I think I'll stick around if you'll have me. Thanks for listening.---Jack | | | | | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 Moderator | | Moderator Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 4,215 | Welcome Jack, can't beat a deal where you trade work for a truck like that. Maybe the Arizona truck isn't too rusty? Sounds like you are all ready for spring to arrive, hopefully it comes soon. Nothing beats going to get lumber with a 60+ year old truck! Good luck with it.

Very little work with an orbital sander brought up shiny unpitted steel. Only minor rot underneath, floor, door bottom. Truly remarkable for 62 years old.---Jack | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | Jack, glad to have another fellow around that has a soft spot for these old trucks. For all they have done for us it feels only right we do something for them. Save them from the crusher.

That is the reason behind the wooden box on the back.It is to hold my tools. Eventually I will look for a shortbed to replace the box when I retire. The truck has a lumpy texture but I like it as it is. I'll pretty it up as money and oportunity makes it possible but I plan on driving this truck and only this truck as long as we both survive. The condition was not real bad when I got it considering it has been out in a field for years. Alot of surface rust which I removed with an orbital sander. Painted everything with Rustoleum spray can paints, primers and anti rust products.I replaced all of the glass except the back window and all the rubber in the cab.Went through the brake system and installed all new shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and hoses. Went through the fuel system also.Cleaned up the interior and gauges and installed things that were broken or missing. The 235 had been transplanted by PO,also the transmission(4sp)drive shaft and rear axle(4:11).The PO rebuilt the motor and guessing from the way it runs it doesn't have alot of miles on the rebuild. Now that I have gotten most of the bugs out of it I'm getting confident enough in it to drive it places. I am happy with it as it now sits but I'm sure I'll be constantly doing some kind of repair but that's one of the main reasons I like this truck. It is mechanic friendly, unlike the stuff they build today. Thanks for looking. I'll probably add to this later.---Jack before after | | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,715 back yard wrench turner | | back yard wrench turner Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,715 | Very Nice!
