Once your core is fixed I'd keep coolant running through it all the time. That way it's just like a small radiator (which it is) and won't have coolant just setting in it. I've done this for about 20 yrs since I get my core recored and have had no leaks. Living the the desert, I haven't noticed any great increase in cab temp either.
