On my 98 buick centuary only the parking lights come on when you start it. they are pretty brite. On my 2005 Colorado the low beams come on when you put it in gear however you can override it by turning switch all the way to left (past it,s normal spring loaded position) the lights then stay off until you manually turn them on or restart the vehicle
