I watched a Youtube Video from a guy who repairs 47-54 door hinges. He said and showed all about the spring and hinge. He said the spring was to keep door open. But if you say so. As you say, I don't have AD. Just a mechanical engineer looking at the internet and thinking about it. To me it looks like the hinge bar hits the hinge mounting face plate opening or hits some solid part of the hinge. To use the stretch limit of a torsion spring for a stop would be bad design. Maybe an AD guru like DG or other can confirm.
