That wire should be 10 ga. minimum. For it to smoke, something has to be shorted directly to ground. Is the wire touching metal anywhere? Perhaps the terminal is bent at the gauge and shorting there? If not it's likely some other smaller wires burned in the process. You need to check everything thoroughly.
