Let me start by saying I don't know much about electricity, so any answer you're kind enough to provide must be at the third grade level...or lower.
Here's the situation. I put a wiring harness in my '48 3100 with a six volt system. The instructions were, well, less than adequate (16 lines on a sheet of paper), and although I thought I got everything on right, I don't believe the wire from the starter to the ammeter should be making that much smoke.
My father and I (mostly him) got the thing running for the first time since I tore it down 17 years ago, and all went well until we shut it down. The key was left in the "on" position, and a few minutes later there was smoke in the cab. The wire from the starter to the ammeter was hot. This CAN'T be normal, can it?
What did I do wrong?
