Thanks, but the switch wasn't the problem. It was sitting on the heater hoses.
Although I told myself to take a day off from the truck, I just walked by it and had to take a quick peek. The facing of the fuel gauge was toasted. Now, I had connected up the "correct" wire to one side of the gauge, but didn't install the wire to the sendign unit on the tank. Could this have caused the problem? also, one of the thin black wires (for dash lights) back behind the gauge cluster had a chunk of char on it. I didn't go any further.
