To answer Steve H's question, drill a 1/8" hole in the thermostat. That will allow the air to escape as the system fills.
Some people prop the thermostat open with an aspirin when doing first fill, but I'd be afraid I'd screw up the thermostat and poke a hole in my hand at the same time.
