all the pressure cap does is increase the boiling point. Even if the fan was on backwards it would still cool just sitting in the garage. For some reason you aren't getting flow, just figure out why, I would take the water pump off and look in there. As that is what creates the flow. Is there water flowing through the radiator? You should be able to see some movement.
