What about putting some sort of sealer on the inside of the heater hoses where they connect to the heater core? That would fill any possible leaks there. You would most likely have to split the hoses to get them off the next time but beats a wet floor.
As you mentioned, not much inside the heater other than the core. The real connections are exterior to the heater housing.
