It is overkill on a smaller vehicle, but this is the type bolt I use on frames on my 18 wheelers. http://www.imperialsupplies.com/item/0192380 They come in all sizes and are used with flanged nuts.

Truck manufacturers used these until about 15 years ago. They now use Huck bolts because they are cheaper and much quicker to install.
