Looking at putting a mid 50's 235 (full oil press, insert bearings) through a rebuild. Its not the original engine. Truck is a 43 1.5 ton G506. Its running now, and I have yet to tear into it... so still in the planning stage:
Would like to bump the compression up to about 8:1. What would be the least expensive way to do it? Not looking for hi-perf, just 'better'. I am not sure if any of the ideas I have are even possible:
New pistons (cost?)
New rods (cost?)
Mill the block down? (seems the least expensive)
New cam? (would a new cam at low compression be 'worth it'?)
I have decided that if the bore is more than .040 over I will sleeve back to standard... and if so I will live with the lower compression/performance UNLESS there is something that is very economical to do.
Last question:
It looks that a full rebuild kit is about $1k, and machining could run another $1k. At $2k is a crate motor (again, not hi-perf) a better deal?
