My hat's off to you using '40 as your daily driver,so you obviously know what your talking about then.
I wasn't dismissing the old low pressure system,it obviously worked considering the amount of them still around.
My own (splashy) engine had suffered a catastrophic rod failure and punched it's way out the block before I got the truck so I guess I based my assumptions on that,but then again I can't vouch for its previous 50+ years maintenance schedule.
Like you say,if properly maintained like most things,they can last a long,long time.
