Hey Jock, the old splashy is not so bad, I've done several 2000 to 3000k trips in the truck, never hinted at a problem. Included in the daily grind , totalling nearly 90,000miles over the last 15 yrs.
I'm pretty sure todays quality oils and modestly careful driving has helped. But essentially , I believe the design to be sound, just needs suitable care and proper maintance.
