Sorry for the confusion, kept trying to paste my lengthy response and wouldn't accept it. I will try and shorten it. #1 and #6 piston reach TDC at the same time of different strokes. #1 on compression. #6 on exhaust. when baring the engine over observe valve opening and closing on #6 (valve rock). this means #1 on compression, now set valves and check timing with distributor. The same holds true for setting #6 valves, watch for valve rock on #1. The same holds true for #2 and #5 which come up to TDC together and so doe #3 and #4. If rocker shaft not installed then install push rods and observe, much more accurate.
