First thing to check see if the flywheel is rubbing something like the cover. Check the harmonic balancer & the front pulleys, water pump, & gen/alt. If the sound is comeing from inside the engine you are right. It could be out of commision for a while. Sometimes something is drawn into the engine if the air cleaner is not on good or something falls out of the carb. It might be a rod knocking.
