A little update.
Thanks again to Roberr54 for suggesting the heat riser. I got it together and buttoned up today, along with a new oil line and a fresh set of plugs.
Its running very well down the road, and idles much smoother now.
the rich condition I had observed earlier on the plugs seems to be resolved (so far anyway).
It still has a bit of a burble when idling and I can hear a lifter tick that's annoying me (I think I may have a bad hydroloic lifter) but the darn thing running a ton better than it was.
Pulling the plug wire from my number two cylinder now seems to have little affect on the idle, so I'm thinking that might be my burble source.
