You will need to remove the pitman arm to adjust the play in the steering box. Don't know about the cold dark north, but here in Flordia, Advance Auto Parts will loan a pitman arm puller for free. Other auto parts stores probably do the same.
Good luck with your steering adjustments. I dreaded driving my '54 before I adjusted the steering - had over a quarter turn of free play in the steering. Now it's tight and a pleasure to drive. My only cost was for a fish scale.
