Not sure how the rest do it, but I leave the extended portion of the hub attached to the drum. It gives me something to hold on to. Did the wheel turn freely before you pulled the Bearings? If there was drag the brakes could be holding it on as already pointed out. If you get the brkes backed off grasp extended hub and wiggle it all ways while pulling outward.
