You are referring to two types of filters.

The optional/accessory by-pass canister oil filter will filter about 10% of the flow, the other 90% does not get filtered. Over time, all the oil gets filtered. This works quite well.

The block can be modified for a full-flow filter - that is the one that might cause wear if the shavings are not cleaned out. People who have done this seem to be able to clean out the shavings.
