One thing I ran into when rebuilding the started on my 58... the drive is longer than most parts stores can get. I had to go to a rebuilder to get the correct drive.
If you replaced the drive with a new one, did you compare the length?
Did you replace the starter drive or simply clean it and try to reuse it? If you reused your original starter drive it is probably toast. What is grinding is the rollers inside trying to get a grip. And when the finally do.... it starts.
