In your first photo the pivot pin for the linkage is missing. I assume that was removed sometime during the job, and not gone to begin with? It looks like it's back in place in the last picture.

That pivoting yoke is critical to good operation of the starter. If it's bent or worn, the motor can start turning before the pinion gear is fully engaged in the flywheel.
