I seem to remember that you needed a guide shaft that resembled the transmission input shaft to be sure that the clutch plate was in the proper position. Otherwise you cant insure that the spline on the transmission will fit into the clutch plate and the end of the transmission shaft will fit into the pilot hole in the crankshaft.
