Thanks for the help guys. I feel like a real dufus. I got a stronger light and my old man glasses and took a better look under the dash. Like Jimmi described above, there is a fitting screwed into the back of the gauge that I thought was part of the gauge. The gauge has the same setup as the original when the fitting was removed. Interestingly, that fitting is double male ended and can be reversed and then use a common compression nut and ferule. Based on Jimmi's experience maybe going this route would be better than using the original setup. At least it would be easier to remove the line if necessary.
Denny, you did have it all worked out a month ago. It was my age and eyesight that fouled me up.
