Surge brakes are better than nothing, but not much. It's impossible to apply them without hitting the tow vehicle brakes first. At times, I want to use just trailer brakes to prevent the loaded trailer from pushing me around, particularly in a downhill turn. In case of a tail-wag situation, electric brakes can be locked down tight and the tow vehicle accelerated to pull the sway out. None of these things can be done with the hydraulic surge coupler.
