I would also put another battery in parallel with starting battery.
The variation in cranking speed indicates one or two cylinders may be firing. Possible causes
low compression on one or two
double check that distributor is in right way and not 180 out.
Double check that you have the right wires going to the right plugs (dun that one)
A short shot of propane down carb while cranking may help.
