I do not agree with putting a clip or subframe suspension and then towing with that rig. If you are using a MII suspension or the like, the truck is no longer capable of working a load.
I believe a 1/2 ton would likely be too light duty for the job in stock form. I would not even consider a load like this with a short wheelbase truck. Brakes will be key. My 59 gmc 1/2 ton longbed tips the scale at 4500lbs. A 1/2 ton shortbed gmc is listed at 3350lbs. I would expect a heavier tow vehicle would be better than lighter one.
