Check the photo link above. A T-fitting is put on the oil pressure port to feed the filter. The gauge will read oil filter pressure, and the filtered oil goes from the pump to the filter and back to the sump, hence the 'bypass' name. Eventually, all the oil will make it through the filter and remove the gunk.
