Ok I managed to find the little steel ball with my timing light, and I timed it to the pointer and then every so slightly advanced it. Unfortunately I am still having this new problem. Car takes off perfectly and just as you begin to make some progress accelerating it begins to flat line, pop, backfire, and is powerless until you shift into the next gear. Then it gets some of its power back, feels like it wants to go, and the begins falling on its face all over again.
