I don't have an answer for factory lube. I don't ever remember seeing anything that looked like a residue from the springs being lube. I did rebuild the leaf spring in the rear of 77 Vette. There are some IIRC polypropylene inserts made for the Vette. The inserts are a little wider than the springs, because there is a lip on the edge to keep them from coming out. The inserts did make a difference in how it rode. Most lubes I would think would collect dirt, unless you wrapped them, like they did on some of the more expensive early cars.
